perspectives

i opened up a time capsule today. well, it was an old hat box that held tons of pictures, letters, love notes and journals going back to when i was in 6th grade - 1985! so many memories came rushing back. it was fantastic.

rather than tell a new story, i'll put up an entry from my journal from the summer of 1998. i was living in a shore house in belmar for the summer. i just turned 25.

--------------

6/19/98

such a beautiful friday. cloudless sky, not too hot. not yet. supposed to get really humid this afternoon - maybe rain. but right now it's perfect.

this weekk flew by. another crazy weekend will come and go and the work week will fly by again. where does the time go? am i really having that much fun?

staring out the window of the train, i just realized something. perspective's a funny thing. the trees and fences closest to me, things right in front of my face, rush by so fast. all i can see of them is a blur. it's pretty dark since the sun can hardly break through the canopy of branches overhead.

but further off the scenery changes. the colors are more brilliant and objects are more in focus. tiny white sailboats in the inlet stay in my field of vision longer.

i guess that's the same with all things. all through life you move so fast, you never notice what's right in front of you. it all passes by in a flash. it's those things in the distance that grab your attention. sticks around longer. maybe it's your ultimate destination. either way, it looks so inviting.

but the only way to see it all clearly is to stop in your tracks and take the whole scene in. notice the grass at your feet, houses in the distance and way off on the horizon, see the sunlight dancing on the peaks of the ocean waves.

the only way to see it all is to take one step at a time.
